Playing The "Wrong" Note

Here is a simple phrase that can really add a lot of depth to your playing.

We'll be using notes from the E minor pentatonic scale, which are E, G, A, B and D. Try playing the notes B, A and G phrased as a triplet.
You can think of a triplet as a three syllable word like discipline (dis-ci-pline) and play one note per syllable.

Play this three note triplet pattern three times, then play the E root. This sounds good, but it's even better when you add a "wrong" note!
Replace the B with Bb (B flat), which is one fret lower in pitch. The Bb is not in our key but it works very well. It has a bluesy kind of vocal quality to it. A real attitude.

Experiment with notes that aren't in key. You can't stay on them very long but when you just breeze through them, they can spice up your playing no matter what style you play. Have fun!
